Copper, Plasma and Red Blood Cells
An essential trace mineral measured in both circulation and cells, useful for spotting deficiency or overload.
Consider this test if:
- Taking high-dose zinc and want to check it has not driven copper down
- Investigating unexplained anemia, low white counts, numbness, or balance changes
- After bariatric surgery or with a malabsorption condition affecting trace minerals
- Following up a suspected copper overload or family history of Wilson's disease
- Tracking copper status while supplementing or correcting a known deficiency
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results in 4-6 days · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
No fasting is required. Copper testing is highly sensitive to trace-metal contamination, so collection uses a metal-free tube and the plasma and red cells must be separated promptly. Note any zinc or copper supplements and their timing, since both shift the result. Recent inflammation, pregnancy, or estrogen-containing medication can raise plasma copper independent of true stores.

What this test is for
Copper is an essential trace mineral your body uses for iron metabolism, connective tissue, nerve function, and antioxidant defense. This test measures copper in both plasma and red blood cells, pairing the circulating fraction with the cellular fraction for a fuller view of copper status than either alone. Low copper is linked to anemia, low white-cell counts, fatigue, numbness, balance problems, and is a known consequence of excess zinc supplementation, malabsorption, or bariatric surgery. High copper points toward copper overload or, classically, Wilson's disease, and is also raised by inflammation, pregnancy, and estrogen, since most plasma copper rides on ceruloplasmin.
The separate serum-or-plasma copper and RBC copper items each measure one of these fractions; this combined test reports both. If a clinician is working up Wilson's disease, 24-hour urine copper and ceruloplasmin are the usual companions.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost, covering the lab and what it takes to run the service. It is never a profit on the test itself. Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9 per month, and any applicable lab order or draw fee is itemized before you pay.
Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. Eligible tests can be paid for with an HSA or FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results appear in your Mito dashboard after the laboratory completes processing. A clinician then reviews them before your analysis and personalized action plan are finalized. Timing varies by test, and specialty assays and at-home kits may take longer.
Do I need a physician's order?
No. Mito provides the laboratory order when one is required, so you do not need to arrange a separate physician visit before purchasing.
