What this test is for
Celiac disease requires specific HLA class II gene variants to develop, and this test genotypes for HLA-DQ2 and HLA-DQ8, the haplotypes that encode the proteins behind the gluten-driven immune response. Because the test reads your DNA, the result is stable for life: a negative result, meaning you carry neither DQ2 nor DQ8, essentially rules celiac disease out and ends the question. A positive result confirms genetic predisposition but not disease, since DQ2 or DQ8 is present in roughly 30% of people and only about 3% of carriers ever develop celiac. It is most useful for sorting out unexplained iron-deficiency anemia, chronic fatigue, osteoporosis, neurologic symptoms, or GI complaints, and for screening first-degree relatives of someone with confirmed celiac.
This NGS-based genotype reports full DQA1 and DQB1 results plus DQB1*02 homozygosity and a genetic risk tier. Unlike celiac antibody tests, it does not depend on whether you are currently eating gluten, so it stays valid even after you have started a gluten-free diet.
