What this test is for
Cardiolipin IgG is an antiphospholipid antibody that targets a fat molecule on cell membranes and is one of the core markers used to evaluate antiphospholipid syndrome. Elevated IgG is associated with abnormal blood clotting (venous and arterial thrombosis), low platelets, stroke, and recurrent pregnancy loss, and it is frequently found in people with systemic lupus erythematosus and other autoimmune conditions such as Sjogren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis. The IgG class carries the strongest and most consistent association with clotting risk, which is why it is the form most often checked first.
This test measures only the IgG class. The companion IgM and IgA tests add sensitivity in select cases, and the combined cardiolipin or full antiphospholipid panel is the broader workup when the clinical suspicion is high. Because a single positive can be transient, antiphospholipid testing is confirmed on a repeat sample at least 12 weeks later before it is considered persistent.
