CA 27.29 is a protein shed by breast cancer cells that can be measured in the blood, where rising or falling levels track the burden of disease over time. It is used mainly to monitor people with known metastatic breast cancer and to watch for recurrence after treatment, not to screen healthy people, because levels can be normal in early breast cancer and elevated in benign breast, liver, and ovarian conditions. The most useful pattern is a trend: a sustained rise can signal progression or recurrence, while a fall suggests response to therapy. It is one of several breast-specific markers; the related CA 125 test is used for ovarian cancer and CA 19-9 for pancreatic and biliary cancers, so the right one depends on the cancer in question. Results are most meaningful when compared against your own prior values using the same assay.
