Pre-test considerations
BUN alone does not require fasting. Hydration has a real effect: being dehydrated raises the value and overhydration lowers it, so a normal fluid state gives the most representative reading. Recent high protein intake can also nudge it up.

What this test is for
Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) measures urea, the main waste product of protein metabolism that the kidneys filter out of the blood. High BUN points to reduced kidney filtration, dehydration, a high-protein intake, or increased protein breakdown, while low BUN can reflect low protein intake, overhydration, or liver disease. It is one of the oldest and simplest markers of renal function, but it shifts with hydration and diet, so it is most informative read alongside creatinine and eGFR.
