What this test is for
This is a urine dipstick test for bilirubin, the pigment produced when the body breaks down red blood cells and normally cleared by the liver into bile. Healthy urine contains no detectable bilirubin, so a positive result points to conjugated (direct) bilirubin leaking into the bloodstream and out through the kidneys, typically from hepatitis, bile-duct obstruction, gallstones, or other liver and biliary disease. It is read alongside the other dipstick findings (color, protein, glucose, ketones, blood, nitrite, leukocytes) as part of a standard urinalysis, and a positive strip is usually confirmed and characterized with blood testing.
