BNP is a hormone the ventricles of the heart secrete in response to increased pressure and stretch. Levels rise when the heart is working harder than it should, which is why BNP is one of the central markers used to evaluate suspected heart failure in people with shortness of breath, fluid retention, swelling in the legs, or reduced exercise tolerance. A low BNP is reassuring and helps rule out heart failure as the cause of breathlessness, while elevated levels point toward cardiac strain and warrant echocardiography and clinical follow-up. BNP rises naturally with age and increases transiently after vigorous exercise, so results are read against your age and recent activity.
