What this test is for
APOE genotyping identifies which version of the apolipoprotein E gene you carry, reported as combinations of the e2, e3, and e4 alleles. APOE influences how efficiently your body clears LDL and remnant lipoproteins, so the genotype helps explain why some people have stubbornly high cholesterol and elevated coronary heart disease risk. The e4 allele is generally linked to higher LDL and greater cardiovascular risk, while e2 is associated with a distinct lipid pattern (type III hyperlipoproteinemia) that can raise triglycerides and remnant particles. Because your genotype is fixed at birth and never changes, a single test settles it for life.
