Pre-test considerations
No fasting required and timing of day does not matter. Because the antibody response builds over weeks, a repeat draw 10 to 14 days after the first is often more useful than a single result for judging whether the titer is rising or falling.

What this test is for
Antistreptolysin O (ASO) measures antibodies your immune system makes against streptolysin O, a toxin produced by group A streptococcus. A rising or persistently elevated titer documents a recent strep infection and is mainly used when post-streptococcal complications are suspected, such as acute rheumatic fever or post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis after a sore throat or skin infection. The antibody response begins about a week after infection, peaks at two to three weeks, and usually falls back to baseline within 6 to 12 months, so a single value is most meaningful when compared against a repeat draw or read alongside symptoms. This test confirms exposure, not active infection: a throat culture or rapid strep test is the right tool for diagnosing a current sore throat.
A single ASO measures the antibody on its own. The separate Uric Acid, RF, CRP, and ASO panel adds inflammation and rheumatology markers when joint symptoms are being worked up more broadly.
