What this test is for
A red-blood-cell antibody screen looks for unexpected antibodies in your blood that react against antigens on donor red cells. These antibodies can form after a prior transfusion, pregnancy, or transplant, and they matter because they can trigger a transfusion reaction or, in pregnancy, affect the fetus (hemolytic disease of the newborn). A positive screen is the standard check before a transfusion and a routine part of prenatal care. Note this is the red-blood-cell screen; the separate Adrenal Antibody Screen looks for antibodies against adrenal tissue and is used for entirely different, autoimmune adrenal questions.
