Pre-test considerations
No fasting required and no special timing. A single whole-blood draw in an EDTA (lavender-top) tube is needed, and the full tube volume allows follow-up antibody identification if the screen is positive. Recent transfusion or Rh immune globulin (RhoGAM) can affect results, so note either on the requisition.

What this test is for
The red blood cell antibody screen looks for atypical IgG antibodies in your blood that target antigens on red blood cells. These antibodies form after prior exposure through pregnancy, transfusion, or transplant, and they can cause transfusion reactions or hemolytic disease of the newborn if they cross the placenta. A positive screen means a clinically relevant antibody is present, which is then identified and titered to gauge its significance, particularly in pregnancy. The test uses the antiglobulin (Coombs) method and is designed to catch IgG antibodies, though it occasionally picks up IgM antibodies as well. A negative screen is reassuring: it means no atypical antibodies were detected and compatible blood is straightforward to provide.

Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.

When will I get my results?
