Pre-test considerations
Fasting is not required, but preparation matters. Maintain a normal, unrestricted salt intake beforehand. Blood is drawn mid-morning after you have been up and about for at least two hours and then seated for 5 to 15 minutes, since posture changes aldosterone. Several drugs distort the aldosterone-to-renin ratio and should be discussed with your clinician at least four weeks ahead: spironolactone, eplerenone, amiloride, triamterene, potassium-wasting diuretics, and licorice root products.

What this test is for
Aldosterone is the adrenal hormone that tells the kidneys to hold onto sodium and excrete potassium, which raises blood volume and blood pressure. This panel measures aldosterone alongside plasma renin activity and the aldosterone-to-renin ratio, the combination used to screen for primary hyperaldosteronism, a cause of high blood pressure that is often missed and frequently treatable. High aldosterone with suppressed renin points toward primary aldosteronism, which classically shows up as hard-to-control hypertension or low potassium causing fatigue, muscle weakness, cramps, or frequent urination. Because aldosterone shifts with dietary salt, posture, and several blood pressure medications, results are read against how the sample was collected and what drugs you take.

Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. Eligible tests can be paid for with an HSA or FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results appear in your Mito dashboard after the laboratory completes processing. A clinician then reviews them before your analysis and personalized action plan are finalized. Timing varies by test, and specialty assays and at-home kits may take longer.
