Adiponectin
A fat-derived hormone that tracks insulin sensitivity and metabolic health, with levels that fall as fat mass rises.
Consider this test if:
- Building a detailed metabolic baseline alongside fasting insulin, A1c, and triglycerides
- Insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, or a strong family history of type 2 diabetes
- Tracking whether weight loss, diet, or exercise is improving insulin sensitivity
- Carrying excess abdominal fat and wanting a hormonal read on metabolic risk
- Assessing cardiovascular risk beyond standard cholesterol numbers
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results in 7-8 days · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
A morning blood draw is typical. Fasting is not strictly required, but recent meals and short-term changes in weight or activity can shift the result, so test under consistent conditions when tracking over time. For comparable results, keep the timing and your recent diet and exercise routine similar between draws.

What this test is for
Adiponectin is the most abundant hormone secreted by fat cells, and it does the opposite of what its source suggests: it improves insulin sensitivity, lowers inflammation, and protects blood vessels. Levels run inverse to body fat, so they tend to be low in obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes, and high in very lean states. Low adiponectin predicts future insulin resistance and is associated with higher cardiovascular risk, which makes it a useful complement to fasting insulin, A1c, and triglycerides when you are mapping metabolic health. Because levels rise with weight loss from diet, exercise, or bariatric surgery, it can also show whether a metabolic intervention is working at the hormonal level. It is a research-grade metabolic marker rather than a routine screen, most informative alongside the standard glucose and lipid picture.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost, covering the lab and what it takes to run the service. It is never a profit on the test itself. Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9 per month, and any applicable lab order or draw fee is itemized before you pay.
Where do I get tested?
Choose an available partner lab at checkout. If your cart contains multiple blood tests, Mito helps consolidate the eligible tests at one lab when possible. At-home kits and scans follow the collection or appointment process shown on their product page.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. Eligible tests can be paid for with an HSA or FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results appear in your Mito dashboard after the laboratory completes processing. A clinician then reviews them before your analysis and personalized action plan are finalized. Timing varies by test, and specialty assays and at-home kits may take longer.
Do I need a physician's order?
No. Mito provides the laboratory order when one is required, so you do not need to arrange a separate physician visit before purchasing.
