What this test is for
This test determines your ABO blood group (A, B, AB, or O) and your Rh factor (positive or negative), the two systems that matter most for transfusion compatibility. It is the standard pre-transfusion check, since receiving incompatible blood triggers a serious immune reaction. In pregnancy it carries added weight: an Rh-negative mother carrying an Rh-positive baby can develop antibodies that affect this or a future pregnancy, which is why Rh typing decides whether Rh immune globulin (such as RhoGAM) is needed. ABO and Rh mismatch between mother and newborn is also a common cause of hemolytic disease of the newborn. Because your blood type is fixed for life, a single confirmed result is something you carry forward permanently.
