17-Hydroxypregnenolone
An adrenal steroid intermediate that helps pinpoint enzyme blocks behind excess androgens and hirsutism.
Consider this test if:
- Working up hirsutism, acne, or signs of androgen excess that need an enzyme-level explanation
- Evaluating possible congenital adrenal hyperplasia, especially 3-beta-HSD deficiency
- Sorting out where in the adrenal steroid pathway a hormone abnormality originates
- Following up an abnormal 17-hydroxyprogesterone or DHEA result with more specific testing
- HSA/FSA eligible
- Typical results in 1-2 weeks · Reviewed by a real clinician
- Drawn at a CLIA/CAP-accredited lab near you ·
Pre-test considerations
In menstruating women, levels are higher during the follicular phase than the luteal phase, so note your cycle day for accurate interpretation. This is often drawn as part of an ACTH stimulation or dexamethasone suppression protocol, in which case follow the timing your clinician specifies. The sample is serum or plasma and must be frozen for transport.

What this test is for
17-hydroxypregnenolone is an early intermediate in steroid hormone production, made from pregnenolone and sitting upstream of DHEA, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, cortisol, and the sex hormones. Because it sits at a branch point in steroidogenesis, its level helps localize specific enzyme deficiencies, most notably 3-beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase deficiency, a form of congenital adrenal hyperplasia where 17-hydroxypregnenolone accumulates because the next step is blocked. Elevated levels are also seen in idiopathic hirsutism, making it useful when working up unexplained excess hair growth, irregular cycles, or signs of androgen excess. Levels rise with ACTH stimulation and fall with dexamethasone suppression, and they run higher in the follicular phase than the luteal phase, so timing and clinical context shape interpretation. It is a specialized marker, usually ordered to answer a specific adrenal or androgen question rather than as a general screen.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. The member price is our cost — covering the lab and what it takes to run the service — never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee. Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results post to your dashboard once your lab completes them, then a clinician reviews them and your full analysis and personalized action plan (with clear next steps) follow. Turnaround varies by test: specialty assays and at-home kits take longer, and each test shows its expected turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
