About this test
Progesterone is the steroid hormone produced by the corpus luteum after ovulation, and by the placenta during pregnancy. It is barely detectable in the first half of the menstrual cycle, then rises sharply after ovulation to prepare the uterine lining for implantation, which makes a mid-luteal measurement the standard way to confirm that ovulation actually occurred. Low progesterone points to anovulation, a short luteal phase, or primary or secondary hypogonadism, while high levels appear in pregnancy and in certain forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia. Because the level changes dramatically across the cycle, timing the draw correctly matters more than for almost any other hormone. In pregnancy it is also used to assess corpus luteum and placental function.
Consider it if
- Trying to conceive and wanting to confirm that you are ovulating
- Irregular, long, or absent cycles, or a suspected short luteal phase
- Working through a fertility evaluation or tracking response to ovulation induction
- Pairing a basal body temperature chart with a lab measurement to pinpoint ovulation
- Assessing corpus luteum or placental support in early pregnancy
Why are there member and non-member prices?
Members get Mito's no-markup price on tests. The non-member price is the standard price.
Mito membership is $9/month and unlocks member pricing across the catalog. It's how Mito is supported, so we don't have to mark up your tests or earn more when you buy more. Your member savings are applied at checkout.

Pre-test considerations
Timing is the critical factor. For confirming ovulation, draw about 7 days after expected ovulation (around day 21 of a 28-day cycle, adjusted for your own cycle length). No fasting is required. Note any progesterone supplements or hormonal medication, since they affect the result.

Frequently asked questions
View all FAQsHow does pricing work?
Every test shows the member price next to the standard non-member price, so you can see what membership saves you. Your price is our cost plus a small amount to run the service, never a profit on the test itself; Mito makes its money on the $9 membership, not on marking up your tests. Members pay even less, applied at checkout (membership is $9/mo, and you still pay the lab’s order fee). Prices are itemized before you pay, with no hidden fees.
Where do I get tested?
Choose a partner lab (Quest, Labcorp, or BioReference) at checkout. If your cart spans multiple tests, we consolidate the whole order onto a single lab so you only make one visit.
Is this eligible for HSA/FSA?
Yes. This test is HSA/FSA eligible, and you can pay with your HSA/FSA card at checkout.
When will I get my results?
Your results are typically visible within 1-2 business days of your lab visit. A clinician then reviews them, and your full analysis and personalized action plan — with clear next steps — follow once that review is complete. Specialty assays and at-home kits take longer; each test shows its turnaround before you buy.
Do I need a doctor’s order?
No. Mito provides the lab order for you, so you can book and get tested without a separate doctor visit.
