What is a DEXA scan?
A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) body composition scan is a medical imaging test used to measure bone mineral density (BMD). It is considered the most accurate method for diagnosing osteoporosis, a condition characterised by weak and brittle bones.
Apart from bone density, a DEXA scan is also capable of analysing your muscle mass and visceral fat distribution. These measurements give us an accurate notion of your overall body composition.
What can a DEXA scan detect?
When it comes to your longevity, the two most important measurements are your muscle mass, and your bone density.
Muscular tissue naturally burns more calories at rest than fats. Consequently, boosting muscle mass helps you to increase your basal metabolic rate, and efficiently burn off excess calories.
DEXA scans give you a precise measure of your lean muscle mass, and allows you to monitor your risk of age-related muscle loss conditions like sarcopenia. Developing sarcopenia increases your risks of frailty, falls, and loss of independence.
DEXA is also the gold standard for assessing bone mineral density. This information is crucial for understanding your risk of osteoporosis and fractures, allowing for early interventions to maintain strong bones (like exercise, nutrition, and potential medication).
While not its primary purpose, DEXA's total and regional body fat distribution data can also hint at metabolic health risks.
Visceral fat (around organs) is linked to chronic diseases, and getting an in-depth insight into your visceral fat levels can help you safeguard against these risks to your healthspan.
Why you should add a DEXA scan to your health screening?
A DEXA scan improves health and well-being by providing valuable information that can guide personalised medical decisions, lifestyle changes, and preventive measures.
For example, detecting osteoporosis or osteopenia early means treatments such as medications, supplements (like calcium and vitamin D), and lifestyle changes (like exercise) can be implemented sooner, reducing the risk of fractures.
Alternatively, if you have already been diagnosed with any of the aforementioned conditions, regular DEXA scans help you to monitor the efficacy of the interventions you have implemented.
